Childhood Obesity: Early Prevention Tips
Childhood overweight and obesity, along with related diseases, are largely preventable. Since treatment often only manages the problem rather than cure it, prevention is the most effective strategy. The key goal is to maintain a healthy energy balance that can be sustained throughout life.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the following steps can help reduce and prevent childhood obesity:
- Keep portion sizes appropriate.
- Feed them more fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and nuts.
- Limit fat intake, choosing healthier unsaturated fats over saturated ones.
- Reduce sugar consumption.
- Keep them active, ensure they get at least 60 minutes of age-appropriate, moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.
